Swimmers Qualify for State

On Saturday, February 15, 2020, both the boys and girls swim teams competed in the district swim meet at Bowling Green State University. The Indians qualified 18 swimmers to districts and 10 advanced to the state swim meet in Canton. The individual qualifiers include Brooke Schuette in the 200 and 500 free, Andy Scherer in the 500 free, and Branden Arredondo in the 50 and 100 free. Branden also broke the school record in both of these events. The Indians also had 4 relays that qualified for state. The girls 200 free relay (Sarayna Russell, Maggie Duden, Grace Rhoades, Brooke Schuette) and the girls 400 free relay (Sarayna Russell Megan Carroll, Grace Rhoades, Brooke Schuette). The boys qualified in the 200 free relay (Caden Case, JT Hutchinson, Andy Scherer, Branden Arredondo) and the 400 free relay (Maddux Chamberlin, JT Hutchinson, Andy Scherer, Branden Arredondo). The girls also took home the D-II District Runners-up trophy. The state meet will be February 19-22, 2020 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium. Good luck Indians!

Winning Weekend for Indians Basketball

This past Saturday, February 15, 2020 the boys Freshmen basketball team won the NWOAL championship. The boys defeated Patrick Henry by a score of 32-25 in the semifinal game. In the championship game, the Indians traveled to Bryan High School where they played Liberty Center and beat the Tigers 39-21. The team finished the season with a league record of 7-0 and an overall record of 18-1. Congratulations on a great season!

Despite their tough loss to Patrick Henry, the Lady Indians earned themselves a share of the NWOAL title. There was a 3-way tie for the title between Wauseon, Archbold, and Bryan. This is the 10th league title in school history and the first one since 2010. The team finishes the season with an 18-4 record and 5-2 in the league. The Indians will be back in action this Saturday, February 22, as they face the Bryan Golden Bears in the Sectional Finals hosted by Miller City High School. Good luck ladies!

Girls Varsity Basketball February 4th

Girls junior varisity and varisty basketball teams played Bowling Green High School girls basketball February 4th. Wauseon’s junior varsity lost 37-31, but the varsity team blew out the opponent by winning 57-26. The varisty team came out hot in the first quarter by scoring twice as many points as their opponent.

The girls basketball team will face the Bryan Golden Bears on Saturday, February 22 in the Sectional Finals of the OHSAA D-II Basketball Tournament. 

The varsity team now has a record of 15-3 on the season and during conference play they have a record of 4-1.

Coach Ritter Wins NFHS Coach of the Year

Mike Ritter received the award for his involvement in the community, school, and philosophy for coaching. He has become highly decorated throughout his coaching career. As a team, the Indians have won 8 league titles, 5 sectional titles, 3 district titles, 3 regional team titles, 2 state runner-up team titles, and in the 2017-2018 season, a state team championship. Coach Ritter has also coached 65 league champions, 138 district qualifiers, 50 state qualifiers, 33 state placers, 9 state finalists, and a state champion. Last season, he was named the 2018-2019 DII State coach of the Year by the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association (OHSWCA). His two sons, Gavin and Mason, have been able to share in their father’s successes as also being a part in the wrestling program. Gavin graduated from Wauseon last year and is now a member of the wrestling team at the University of Indianapolis. Mason is currently a sophomore at Wauseon and a member of the varsity wrestling team. Currently on the season, Coach Ritter has coached the team to an 8-3 dual meet record. The Indians will be heading to Archbold on Friday to compete against the rival Bluestreaks in hopes of another league dual meet victory.
