Training for athletes during Quarantine

For athletes of any sport being away from your teammates and coaches can be tough but its still necessary to practice the skills of your sport and keep in shape for the upcoming season. There are lots of workouts you can do at home to help acheive your goals. One fun idea is to challenge a teammate to a pushup contest. This keeps the workout interesting and competitive while pushing yourself to get stronger. Another great workout to do at home is a squat. Squat with just your body weight at 10 reps 3x. This is an excellent workout to strengthen the legs. Jumping jacks is a great way to get cardio right in your living room. There are lots of workouts to become more athletic and get stronger. Whatever you do just have fun.

COVID-19 Update

As COVID-19 continues to impact are country and other country’s around world, we here at Wauseon Indians Sports Blog and are members would like to encourage everyone to stay safe and those affected by COVID-19 to have a speedy recovery.

In other news an updates the Governor of Ohio Mike DeWine has ordered a “Stay at Home Order” which has been effect since March 23, 2020 which will go till April 6, 2020. Governor Mike DeWine order is following in the steps of other Governor’s around the United States.

With spring sports being cancelled around the country we here at Wauseon Indians Sports Blog have a new directive during COVID-19 and that is to dive deep into Wauseon sports history and bring to you are fans the past to the present. These will include past championships, unforgettable wins and accomplishments. We are also learning what we can do for are sports community so please bare with us as we do are best but most importantly please stay safe and keep the ones affected in your hearts. Thank you!

All Sports Postponed

Unfornately, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, OHSAA has postponed all high school sporting events. Wauseon Athletics will reume as normal starting April 11th.

On April 11th, the girls varsity softball will have a double header. They will play at 11am and 1pm at Tinora High School.

Also on April 11th, all three of the boys baseball teams will be teeing off as well. The boys freshman baseball team will play at 11am against Tinora High School at Wauseon High School. The boys junior varisty will play Lake High School at 1pm at Wauseon High School. The boys varsity team will be playing at 3:30pm in the PBR classic. They will play agaisnt Lake High School at Defiance High School.

Indians sending 4 wrestlers to state

4 wrestlers from the Indians wrestling team are going to the OHSAA D-II State championship meet this weekend at Ohio State University.  The meets begin Friday, March 13 and continues through Sunday, March 15. Wauseon has put together another great season, winning the NWOAL conference title again, their 4th in a row.

Damon Molina ’21 – 113 pounds – District Champion
Lawson Grime ’22 – 138 pounds – 4th place at Districts
Jarrett Bischoff  ’20- 160 pounds – District Runner Up
Sammy Sosa ’20 – 285 pounds – District Champion

Basketball Falls in District Semifinals

On Wednesday, March 4th the boys varsity basketball team played the #1 team in the state in the OHSAA District Semifinals. The boys battled, hustled and fought hard all game. Unfortunately they came up short losing 69 – 54 to Shawnee.

The boys varsity basketball team ended the season with an overall record of 17-7 and a conference record of 5-2. Great job on a phenomenal season.

Two years ago (2017-2018) the varsity team’s record was 25-1 and a conference record of 7-0.

One year ago (2018-2019) the team’s record was 18-5 and a conference record of 6-1.

Basketball Shoots Past Elida

On Friday, February 28th, the boys varsity basketball team played Elida High School in OHSAA Sectional Finals. The Indians outshot and out re-bounded Elida to win 62-40. The basketball team has an overall record of 17-5 and a conference record of 5-2. Keep up the great work and good luck Wednesday! Congratulations on being Sectional Champs!

The boys will now play Shawnee High School Wednesday, March 4th at 8:00pm at Ohio Northern University Sports Center, Ada, OH 43512. Directions

Swim Team Swims To Podium

Over the past weekend, the swim team had several athletes place on the podium at the OHSAA state swim meet. Brooke Schuette (’20) placed 3rd in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.60. This is the highest placing at a state swim meet ever by any Wauseon swimmer in school history. Great job Brooke. Branden Arredondo (’20) finished in 8th place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.52. The girls 400 freestyle relay team finished 8th with a time of 3:46.06. The girls on the relay team are, Brooke Schuette (’20), Megan Carroll (’20), Grace Rhoades (’23) and Sarayna Russell (’21). Great job this season to all the swimmers!

Wrestling Wins NWOAL Championship

This past Saturday, February 22, the boys varsity wrestling team took home the NWOAL trophy. This is the 4th consecutive title, and the 8th in the last 12 years for the team. Wauseon advanced 12 wrestlers to the semifinals and of those 12, 7 advanced to the championship finals. The Indians ended the night with 4 runners-up and 3 champions. The team concluded with 174.5 points to finish in first place, Liberty Center came in second with 154 points, and Delta in third with 145.5 points. The wrestlers will begin their postseason run this Friday and Saturday at the sectional tournament held at Defiance high school. Go Indians!

Bowling Bowls to a Finish

On Friday, February 21st, the girls varsity bowling finished 10th place at OHSAA districts. The team bowled for a total of 3197. Quinlynn Rohda led the team with a total of 525 points. Danielle Carr and Jessie French battled for second place. Danielle got 495 points and Jessie got 487 points.

Chance Buehrer finsihed his high school bowling career at the OHSAA district tournament. He bowled a total of 515 to finish 48th overall. He is a 4 year letterman and has qualified back to back years for the OHSAA disctrict tournament.

Wauseon Basketball Dominates Weekend

On Friday, February 21st, both the boys basketball JV and varsity team came away with a huge win! The JV boys finsihed the season undefeated in the NWOAL, they had a 14-8 overall record after beating Delta 29-14. The varsity team finished the season with a record of 5-2 in the NWOAL and a season record of 16-6 by beating Delta 42-25.

On Saturday, February 22nd, the girls varsity basketball team pulled off a nail biting win against Bryan 54-49, in the sectional final! The girls basketball are sectional champions!!
